Our aim is to monitor and control the import of foodstuffs to ensure there is no risk to public health. We also ensures a safe and nuisance free environment in the dock area and prevent the spread of infectious disease from ships visiting the area. The service operates on a 24-hour, 7 days a week basis and is located within Falmouth docks. The areas of work covered are:-

The inspection of ships to ensure hygienic conditions;
·
The control of infectious disease on incoming vessels;
·
Inspecting food entering the port for wholesomeness, fitness and correct labelling. This includes the management and operation of the EC Border Inspection Post where food from non EC Countries is inspected;

Investigating statutory nuisances (i.e. dust, odour problems) in the port and dock estate;
·
Inspections of food manufacturing, processing and catering establishments within the district;
·
Sampling local shellfish beds and monitoring shellfish landings and sampling and monitoring water quality in the River Fal and Helford River.

Investigating reported sickness;
·
Advising interested parties on EC and UK legislation concerning Port Health and EC controls;
·
Liaising with customers and outside agencies, i.e. DEFRA, Customs & Excise etc.

The Authority is a Joint Board comprising elected Members from both Carrick and Kerrier District Councils. The boundary of the Port Health includes all waters to the north and south coasts of Carrick and Kerrier District Councils, which includes Falmouth Bay, the Helford River, Falmouth docks, Carrick Roads and all other rivers and creeks up to the mean high-water mark. In addition the Authority has an agency agreement with Penwith District Council, making it responsible for all commercial shipping activity along its coastline, which includes Penzance, Land's End and Hayle.
