By virtue of the statute that describes the area of the Falmouth and Truro Port Health Authority, a number of land based premises fall within its jurisdiction. These range from risk category A (e.g shellfish depuration centres and smokehouses) to category C/D (e.g. small yacht clubs). Codes of Practice produced by Central Government must be followed when carrying out food hygiene inspections and this includes continual training for Port Health Officers.
The frequency of inspection ranges from once every 3 to 6 months to every 1 to 2 years, depending on the risk they pose to human consumers. In the future all Food Authorities (including Port Health Authorities) will be audited by the Food Standards Agency to ensure that inspection targets and other performance indicators are met. Performance targets of these Authorities will continue to be available for public perusal.
The last decade has seen a rapid increase in cruise liner holidays worldwide and Falmouth is a true reflection of this trend. During 2006 we had approximately 67 cruise calls. Modern liners can accommodate several thousand passengers and half as many crew again. It is the role of the Port Health Authority to ensure that food hygiene standards aboard such vessels is of the highest order to prevent outbreaks of food poisoning.
This Authority has also recently started to carry out inspections of the fish processing operations undertaken on board British flagged fish factory vessels for compliance under the Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2006. There are currently approximately 26 vessels on the Authority’s register of vessels, which is the major part of the British fleet. These vessels are now required to present themselves for inspection twice annually.
